In te reo Māori, kia mau is in invitation to join and a call to say.
Kia Mau aims to warm your winter with a spellbinding festival of theatre and dance from Māori artists. This year BATS presents five works in this important and bold new festival.
Wellington is the birthplace of contemporary Māori theatre in Aotearoa, so the festival was originally called Ahi Kaa Festival when it started in 2015. This name acknowledged the ‘home fires’ - the beginning place of this creative ancestry.
As the vision of the festival grew, curator Hone Kouka turned to composer Hone Hurihanganui for insight. From 2016, Kia Mau Festival continues to build upon the vibrant whakapapa that Ahi Kaa Festival established.
Under the stars of Matariki world class theatre and dance will shine. Find out more on the Kia Mau website.
