NZPQ23 Curatorial Team is seeking artists to co-create New Zealand’s exhibitions in Prague in 2023.

The New Zealand Prague Quadrennial 2023 (NZPQ23) Curatorial Team is seeking artists to co-create New Zealand’s exhibitions in Prague in 2023.

NZPQ23 Ka emiemi is an opportunity to represent performance design in Aotearoa New Zealand on the global stage. NZPQ is looking for 8 – 10 participants to co-create the National Exhibition. The Emerging Designers/Students Exhibition, which will involve up to 20 participants, brings together practitioners who have graduated within the last five years, as well as those currently studying in areas including design for stage and screen, spatial design, multi-media and fine arts. NZPQ will also select one artist to represent Aotearoa in the Fragments II exhibition.

The Curatorial Team consists of Stuart Foster (Commissioner), Meg Rollandi (National Curator) and Sean Coyle (Emerging Designers/Student Curator). The Curatorial team is looking for artists who want to take up opportunities to locate their practice in relation to the international arts environment and for cultural and artistic change.

Stuart Foster says that “participation in this project can expand your research to the world stage, and is an excellent opportunity to promote Aotearoa and its arts to international audiences.”

More and more designers now understand PQ as a platform: a continual stream of activities and collaborations happening across the globe with many different partners, creative professionals, artists, researchers, and theorists. We warmly invite you to apply to join us on this co-creation journey.

The approach to co-creating the national exhibition contribution is a new and innovative curatorial decision. Meg Rollandi considers the curatorial decision as “responding to to the PQ curatorial statement calling for collective imagining of the future of performance design and scenography in a post-pandemic environment, to reflect collaborative practice of artists and designers working in this space.”

The development and creation process of NZPQ23 affords selected artists the opportunity to develop their artforms in a cross cultural and collaborative process, sharing their practice, critical reflection of pandemic impacts on making, culminating in the application of their artistic skills and capabilities in an interdisciplinary, co-creation environment.

NZPQ23 Ka emiemi brings together performance design, theatre, lighting and sound artists, who represent a diverse cross section of the NZ performance community and a range of practitioners at different stages of their careers. With the curatorial team, you will co-create the contribution to a competitive national exhibition, the emerging designers exhibition, and participate in the Fragments section of this preeminent event for the expanded field of theatre, performance and live event design.

PQ is the largest performance and scenography event in the world, established in 1967 to bring the best of design for performance, scenography, and theatre architecture to the front line of cultural activities to be experienced by professional and emerging artists as well as the general public. The PQ exhibitions, festivals, and educational programmes act as a global catalyst for creative progress encouraging, networking, innovation, and future collaborations. Aotearoa, New Zealand have participated in the quadrennial since 1987.
