AS WE DO
Written and Directed by Ronald Trifero Nelson
Join Sam and Trevor as they move through the secret, 1987 analogue world of gay cruising in parks and public toilets. This staged reading offers frank, often funny conversations about sex, desire and survival.
We're inviting audiences into the development of a new play with post-show discussions after each performance.
This feedback directly informs the script as it continues toward a fully realised production later this year.
We asked Ahi Karunaharan, producer, to tell us more about AS WE DO...
What drew you to As We Do right now?
This felt like the moment to get it into a room and let the work breathe with people. The play is still shifting, still asking questions and isn’t trying to be perfect yet, it just trying to be honest. That’s what drew me in.
Why bring it into BATS?
BATS doesn’t let you hide. It’s intimate and immediate. The audience is right there with you. For this kind of work, that closeness matters. It holds the risk. It lets the work stay alive.
Why do queer connection and survival stories still feel urgent?
Because they are. People are still negotiating safety, visibility, belonging every day. But also, these stories aren’t just about surviving. They’re about care. Finding each other. Holding each other up. That feels necessary right now.
Working with Ronald Trifero Nelson — what’s that been like?
Ronald writes with restraint. Nothing is over-explained, everything is felt. As a writer he opens the room up, the actors, creatives, everyone gets to step in and build with it. This process is about deepening, not fixing. Letting the work reveal itself.
