PLEASE NOTE: The audience will convene at the BATS foyer before heading down to the waterfront for the walk. The walk itself takes the route of Water Front>Waitangi Park>Cable Street>Tory Street>Haining St. So the majority of the walk is wheelchair accessible. Worth noting that the overall length of the walk is about 1km, and takes about 60 minutes on foot.
If you own headphones or earphones please bring them along, they will be essential to the experience. We have some spare headphones available if you don't have your own.

Step into the past and explore the untold stories of Wellington through the eyes of early Chinese immigrants.
Encounter is an immersive audio experience blending powerful storytelling with authentic soundscapes. The latest work by Cadence Chung—published poet, composer, and classical vocalist, Encounter is crafted with Chung’s signature poetic narratives, taking audiences on a journey to rediscover Wellington through the eyes of those who helped shape its history and continue to contribute to its future.
Powered by the interactive mobile app PickPath, audiences are guided through the streets of Te Aro, following audio cues and interactive prompts. But here’s the twist: you have the power to choose whose story to follow and which path to take.
Duration
The walk is estimated 60 minutes.
Audience Care
This show confronts racism experienced by Chinese immigrants and therefore contains racist language extracted from real media reports of the time. It also includes descriptions of violence and racism, reflecting real-life experiences.
Accessibility
While Encounter is wheelchair accessible, some of the streets we will visit have narrow footpaths, such as Haining and Frederick St. The walk covers approximately 1.5km.
