A troubled woman arrives to stay at her sister's house for support but tension bursts when she clashes with her overbearing brother-in-law.

Matenui is a kitchen sink drama set in 1977 Aotearoa that seethes and explodes like a domestic opera, up against a backdrop of one of the most turbulent times in our country's history.

Written, directed, designed and performed by Toi Whakaari students and alumni, Matenui is part of the 2022 Toi Whakaari Double Bill season, showcasing emerging Aotearoa talent and bold stories with purpose.

Trigger warning: This performance contains domestic and sexual violence scenes that may disturb some audience members.  The show also includes adult themes (Violence, sexual themes, vomit, loud noises, references to alcohol use, coarse language) and is recommended for audience of 16+.
