One Night Band
Presented by Squash Co. Arts Collective
Over thirteen hours, our team of musicians will work with you to write, record, and mix an entire album from scratch. With each new song, a different rule or “spark” is used to challenge the band and gather creative content. Using your input, we’ll work together to write and record a new song every hour, on the hour for 12 hours before enjoying a drink at the bar and listening back to our brand new album.
Throughout the day, you’ll get to be involved in every stage of the process: pitching ideas, writing lyrics, and even contributing to the album's cover art. But if you’re just here to watch the creative process at work, that’s cool too! There’s something for everyone. Every song will be totally different to the last, culminating in an eclectic and exciting mix of sounds and genres.
One Night Band was originally created by your MC Liam Kelly as How to Write an Album in 2018. During the development season we took home the NZ Fringe PANNZ Tourmakers Award, the NZ Fringe Most Innovative Work Award, and a nomination for the NZ Fringe Best Directed Chaos Award.
This season of One Night Band combines members of the show’s original cast and crew with exciting new local voices. The band consists of musicians pulled from a variety of disciplines, while the show itself is being produced by rising Te Whanganui-a-Tara superstars, Squash Co. Arts Collective.
12 songs, 1 listening party! Come and get involved for a single track, or the entire album! You won’t regret any time spent with One Night Band the morning after.
“I've never been to a show where I've stayed for 9 hours and wish I'd been there for the extra 3.”
