Since She Burned
presented by Tangled Cats Theatre
‘Since She Burned’ is a queer-feminist adaptation of Espy W.H. Williams' Witchcraft or The Witch of Salem. The story follows Amy Fairfax as she grapples with the accusation of witchcraft.
Goody Fairfax has been burned at the stake, and now her daughter, Amy, has been accused of witchcraft. Lacking a formal accusation, the townspeople are uncertain what to believe.
Caught between a power-hungry system and a hysterical community, will Amy escape the folly, or will she be burned like her mother?
Set during the peak witch-hunt era in Salem, 1693, ‘Since She Burned’ critiques mass hysteria and misogynistic accusations as a way to oppress women.
‘Since She Burned’ places queer and feminist voices at the forefront and reclaims autonomy for women, overtly revealing the nature of contemporary political “witch-hunts”.
