The Nine Paintings for Maisie Grey

Written by Mia Oudes, Presented by Heartbreaker Productions

Harriet Romaine is due to leave her whole life behind in two months and twenty two days (not that she’s counting) to start her career as a graphic designer in Sydney. It also means that she will be leaving behind her best friend, Maisie Grey. The two girls were set to enjoy Harriet’s last few months in Cambridge, Waikato, but Maisie is contacted by the executor of her biological mother’s estate, her unknown sister, to let her know that she was named on mother’s will. Maisie convinces Harriet to travel to England with her to meet her biological sister and collect her portion of the estate.

To capture their last days together, Harriet sets out to paint nine paintings as a leaving gift for Maisie. Harriet is, admittedly, better at explaining how she feels after some time to think, so she decides to also write letters on the back of the paintings to record her feelings and thoughts. The project takes an unexpected turn as the two of them arrive in England and find out that Maisie’s adoption story was not quite as her parents had made it out to be. They both struggle to cope with the changed direction of their last summer, after twenty one years of them.

Nominated for Playmarkets Playwrights B4 25 award, Heartbreaker Productions is proud to present a staged reading of ‘The Nine Paintings for Maisie Grey’. Marking not only their 5th anniversary as a feminist theatre company, but also a celebration of its core team as they themselves embark on new chapters in their lives. Stay for a while.

I’ve never seen an authentic piece of media that really does the femme coming of age story justice. Until now.
