Jack McGee

Performer, Playwright, Producer
Jack McGee is a playwright and producer based in Te Whanganui-a-tara. He writes funny dramas and sad comedies about very unhappy people who care deeply about trivial things. In 2024, his play Edit the Sad Parts was highly commended as part of Playmarket’s Playwrights B4 25, an award he’d won the year previous with his play Boys and Girls at the School Silent Disco. He was also shortlisted twice for the award in 2022, with his plays Music Sounds Better Out Here and The Adults are Talking. Unfortunately for him, the jig is finally up, as he is now 25. Working with theatre company Squash Co. Arts Collective, he’s produced many of his own plays, including Boys and Girls here in Te Whanganui-a-Tara, where he earned himself a Wellington Theatre Awards nomination for Best New Playwright. With Squash Co, he also had the pleasure of producing Lia Kelly’s dynamic durational work, One Night Band, which won the Wellington Theatre Award for Most Original Production in 2023. McGee’s plays have had seasons all around the motu, and even popped up in Australia. In between working on shows, he moonlights as a bicycle tour guide and a cycle educator. He’s also a prolific reviewer, and can be found exploring the outer boundaries of word limits over at Art Murmurs. He is in no way related to Greg McGee.
